How to Choose the Right Floor Spring for Heavy Doors

Floor springs are the preferred closer for large, heavy, or high-specification doors. Concealed within the floor, they leave the door face completely clear of hardware — making them the standard choice for prestige entrances, heavy glazed doors, and any installation where aesthetics are a priority alongside performance.

The key specification variables

Floor spring selection comes down to two primary factors: door width and door weight. As a rough guide, a standard 900mm wide door weighing up to 80kg requires a medium-duty unit, while a 1200mm wide glazed door weighing 150kg or more will need a heavy-duty spring in the highest power class.

Single action vs double action

Single action floor springs allow the door to swing in one direction only and return to closed. Double action springs allow the door to swing both ways — essential for corridors where traffic flows in both directions. Double action springs should only be specified where genuinely required, as they add cost and reduce the range of available products.

dormakaba BTS series

The dormakaba BTS range is the most widely specified floor spring range in UK commercial construction, covering door weights from 60kg up to 200kg. As part of the dormakaba Group, Door Spares has direct access to the complete BTS range.

GEZE floor springs

GEZE's floor spring range is particularly well regarded for installations requiring a lower-profile cover plate or a specific spindle configuration. All GEZE floor springs are tested to EN 1154 and suitable for fire-rated doors.

Accessories

A complete floor spring installation requires a bottom pivot, a top pivot, a cover plate and frame box — all must be compatible with the specific spring model. Door Spares stocks all BTS and GEZE accessories. Same-day despatch before 2pm.
