UK Fire Door Standard BS 476-22 Withdrawn — EN 1634-1 Now Required
In a major regulatory shift, the longstanding BS 476-22 fire resistance test standard has been officially withdrawn and replaced by EN 1634-1 across the UK. Buildings over 11 metres are now subject to mandatory quarterly fire door inspections under the Building Safety Act, and digital “Golden Thread” documentation is required for all fire safety hardware. For trade installers, this means fire doors and ironmongery specified on new projects must reference EN 1634-1 test evidence — not the old BS standard. Contractors should audit their specification templates and supplier datasheets now to ensure compliance on upcoming tenders.

Panic Hardware & Emergency Exit Bars
Panic exit hardware is a legal requirement on designated escape routes in commercial and public buildings, allowing immediate single-motion exit without a key or handle. Door Spares stocks a full range of EN 1125-certified panic bars and emergency escape sets — covering single and double-leaf doors, with options for rebated leaves and electric release. Whether you’re fitting out a school, office block, or warehouse, our range covers the most common door widths and includes all fixing hardware. All items are available for same-day despatch from our UK warehouse.

Installer Tip
Checking Panic Bar Dogging Before Handover
Before handing over any panic hardware installation, always verify the dogging function is set correctly for the application — panic bars left in the dogged (held-open) position on fire escape routes will fail a fire safety inspection immediately. On electrically dogged bars, test that the fail-safe release operates on a power cut by disconnecting the supply and confirming the bar returns to panic mode. Check the latch projection and strike alignment are within the manufacturer’s tolerance; a misaligned strike is the most common cause of premature latch wear on high-traffic exits. Finally, record the installation in your fire door log to support the Golden Thread documentation now required under the Building Safety Act.
