Fail-Safe vs Fail-Secure — Which Do I Need?

Fail-safe: The strike releases (door opens) when power is cut. Required on fire escape routes — in the event of a fire or power failure, the door must always be openable. Use fail-safe wherever the door is on an escape route or in a public area.

Fail-secure: The strike locks (door stays shut) when power is cut. Used on secure areas where the door must remain locked during a power failure — server rooms, secure storage, restricted access zones. Not suitable for fire escape routes.
