Fire Door Compliance Checklist for Facilities Managers

Fire door inspections have become increasingly rigorous following recent high-profile prosecutions and the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022. This checklist covers what an inspector will check and what action you need to take to ensure compliance.

Door closer

Every fire door must have a self-closing device that reliably closes and latches the door from any open position. The closer must be CE or UKCA marked to BS EN 1154. Check that the door closes from fully open without assistance and that the latch engages cleanly.

Intumescent and smoke seals

Intumescent seals must be present around all four edges of the door, intact, not cracked or compressed. Smoke brush seals must also be in good condition. Missing or damaged seals are the most commonly identified deficiency in fire door inspections.

Hinges

Fire doors must be hung on a minimum of three CE/UKCA marked fire-rated hinges. Check that all hinges are free from corrosion, screws are tight, and the door has not dropped.

Hold-open devices

Any hold-open device must be electromagnetic and connected to the fire alarm system. Wedges and door stops are illegal on fire doors and must be removed immediately.

Signage

Fire doors should be clearly marked with a Fire Door Keep Shut sign on both sides. Any glazing must be fire-rated glass. Door Spares supplies fire door hardware including closers, hinges, intumescent strips and hold-open devices. Same-day despatch before 2pm.
